Tom Gray – SLE Pen Portrait

SLE Specialism: Maths

I am in my 6th year of teaching and started my career working at an outstanding school in Rotherham. After 3 years developing my own classroom practice I joined my current school as 2nd in Maths in 2012.

As 2nd I supported a significant agenda for change within the department, transforming every aspect. I led a clear focus on quality teaching and learning and a drive to increase the expectations of staff and students particularly at Key Stage 4.

In 2014 I became Curriculum Area Leader for Maths and have continued to grow and develop the department, returning the department’s A*/C% to above 80% in August 2015 and securing the department’s best ever A/A*%, and % of students making 4 and 5 levels progress at the same time.

As well as continuing to develop my own classroom practice I have focused upon redesigning schemes of work to maximize progress of our students, changing setting priorities to reduce underachievement, leading departmental data tracking and intervention as well as working with the department leadership team to develop a fully project based scheme for Y7.

I am passionate about pace, challenge and positivity within Mathematics classrooms and engaging all students in the learning process.

I have a growing experience of developing departments outside of my own and have supported numerous SLE deployments in the past.
