SLE Specialism: English

Throughout my teaching career I have had varied and different roles within school.  On a day to day basis I am focused on improving the chances and experiences of our students.  As Head of English I am proud of our school’s recent success with nearly 90% of our students achieving an A*-C grade in English, over 90% making expected progress and 50% making good progress.  This achievement has been possible by working as part of a great team and working collaboratively to improve student outcomes.  It has been satisfying that our success has been built over a number of years and not at the cost of restricting the experience and talents of teachers or students.  Our students have performed well because of our bespoke and creative curriculum planning, clear and focused data & tracking systems that directly impact on teaching and learning, and our use of effective and purposeful marking and assessment strategies.  I enjoy being an experienced examiner for AQA at GCSE and A-level and have previously examined for WJEC.  I have also recently been appointed as a coursework advisor for A-level Language and Literature with AQA. My experience of leading a large department in a large school has been demanding, but is ultimately rewarding to see my colleagues also develop as leaders and aspiring leaders.  My primary role in school will always be as a classroom teacher; however, I enjoy moving Teaching and Learning forward in my department and across the school and my current work focuses on embedding our key schools of GRIT, determination, failure and risk across the school.
