Laura Darvill – SLE Pen Portrait

SLE Specialism: KS1, Behaviour.

I qualified as a teacher in 2006 with a specialism in advanced early years development and worked in a mainstream school in early years and KS1 classes for 4 years. I then worked in a school for children with MLD and SLD for a year before moving to Springwell Special Academy. I am now lead teacher in the KS1 special and PRU class. My areas of interest include behaviour management, differentiation and special educational needs. I have worked with schools that have referred to Barnsley PRU for support with children with social, emotional and mental health needs for whom challenging behaviour is a barrier to learning. I regularly have staff from other mainstream and special/ PRU settings observing practice, particularly structure, routine, differentiation, use of therapeutic language and restorative practice in my classroom.

I am also one of 2 lead teachers with responsibility for pedagogy within school, and deliver whole school training on teaching and learning strategies with particular focus on early literacy development. I have worked across age phases with children who have been identified as having gaps in literacy development and supported colleagues with differentiation and intervention for identified pupils.

With the skill set and experience I have, I have also had the opportunity to share my practice with School Direct students through behaviour management twilights as part of their Initial Teacher Training Programme.
