Hannah Thornton – SLE Pen Portrait

SLE Specialism: Mathematics

During my career to date I have been privileged to be Head of Department for Mathematics in 3 schools working with students from a variety of contexts. The commonality between these schools is that they had all been placed in a category by Ofsted before I joined, with the quality of mathematics identified as a significant contributing factor to the overall judgement.   Before leaving each role and progressing to my next school, I had addressed the shortfall in performance and secured at least ‘good’ provision in every case.

I believe in consistency, pace and challenge whilst ensuring key skills are embedded. Ethos and environment are fundamental to Mathematics and to the achievement of students.

Most importantly however; I have prioritised the ongoing development of my own classroom practice in order to facilitate an excellent mathematics experience.  I pride myself in ensuring that every lesson I deliver is high quality and meets the individual needs of my learners.

I have experienced Secondary mathematics at all levels; from classroom teacher to leadership and now strategic line management and supporting the development of mathematics in other schools.  This background has equipped me with a wealth of experience and expertise and given me a strong foundation to enable me to support the growth and development of your Mathematics department within your own setting.

Specific areas of expertise:

Leadership and Management
