SLE Specialism: Design & Technology

I have a long history of Subject Leadership roles, with sixteen years as Subject Co-ordinator (GCSE Resistant Materials & A Level Product Design) nine of which I was Second in Department and I have been a Middle Leader for two and a half years in Design & Technology and Food at my current school.

In more recent times as a Middle Leader, I have relished the opportunity to set up a new department; four out of five as new members of staff including an NQT and an RQT.  I have been able develop my vision of Design & Technology, underpinned by my experience and research into best practice.  I have lead my team in modernising all D&T subjects from Y7 to Y13, including three new A Levels; Product Design, Art Textiles and Food Technology and a new GCSE in Product Design.  I have implemented a robust assessment and feedback system called the Learning Journey which is the backbone of the entire Design & Technology curriculum and is a clear pathway for the children and teaching staff to follow from Y7 right up to Y13, each stage of the journey encouraging greater knowledge, understanding and level of independence.

I have attended a Coaching and Mentoring training course and have been an active part of the school Coaching Program.  This involved working with individual members of staff in areas such as classroom management, pupil behaviour and general time management.

I found coaching to be particularly interesting and rewarding, it is always a two-way process and the exchange of ideas and strategies with teachers, within Design & Technology and from other subjects, is always useful plus an excellent vehicle to support staff who may be struggling with specific aspects of their teaching but may be reluctant, for whatever reason, to ask for help.
